"As a child, I observed the process of caterpillars becoming butterflies. I kept a caterpillar in a jar and watched as it formed a cocoon and finally emerged as a butterfly. By chance, I was there the moment a butterfly pulled itself free of its cocoon and spread its wings like a beautiful fan being opened. I was in awe at the amazing transformation these creatures went through and forever hooked on studying the intricacies of nature found in flying insects. Those memories have stayed with me, and have become the creative source of my paintings. The colors and patterns of wings, the details of bodies, legs, and antenna have served as my inspiration and are the dominant theme in my paintings.  I take the minutiae and explore the patterns on a larger scale.."  - Kate Stewart
